AWESOME book!! THANK you Uri for a terrific journey into the thought processes needed to do illustration correctly - THANK YOUNote for readers of this review - this is a learning book, be prepared to sit down and walk through the ideas slowly - so you can absorb them. It's NOT a book on how to draw, but a book on WHAT to draw. I am working on my own book, and changed my direction completely once I understood why you do the things you do in picture books!!
After reading the reviews for this book I purchased a copy thinking that it looked promising. But I was disappointed with some of the content. Although there is some good information some of the material is very dated. The book was written before the digital era. Some of it is still relevant like chapter 6 storyboard and book dummy and chapter 12 picture space and composition. But other chapters are outdated like chapter 16 color preseparation and the chapter on visual references. Overall I felt it was too dated to be of much use and wished I had purchased something more relevant to the type of children's books being written today.
This is a must have book for any aspiring children's picture book writer. You won't need anything else once you own one of these. As an author/illustrator for picture books myself, I speak from experience. Writing children's stories and illustrating is not easy. Many people think it's not real writing... but if you can get published as a children's writer illustrator, you will know what skills are needed to even be considered by a publisher.
This is the book you have been looking for. I've purchased a number of other books about children's publishing, but this one has more wisdom and more real technique than any of them.The title might make you think this book is about illustrating children's books. Yes, an illustrator can get a graduate degree from the material here. But the title doesn't really do the book justice, because Shulevitz covers both writing and illustration. He covers both topics together, showing how the text and the pictures move a story forward to a satisfactory conclusion. Quoting from the book (p.29):"When the actor-stage relationship is clear, when the picture code is consistent, when the progression is appropriate to the action, the picture sequence will 'speak' to the reader. The more clearly the picture sequence speaks, the more enjoyment the reader will be able to get from it. And giving a feeling of satisfaction is essential in children's books."This book has literally hundreds of example illustrations and text excerpts. Most are pencil and ink sketches, but don't be fooled: the author created most of them specifically to illustrate this book. They do a great job.I'm done gushing. If you are interested in this topic, buy the book. You won't be disappointed.
I am learning so much from this book. Its published through Watson Guptil. Always enjoyed their artbooks. I wanted to understand the whole process of writing & illustrating for children. Uri does a fantastic job of showing you each of the steps to creating art that reaches where kids live but isn't limiting in scope. He combines the idea of creating each page to carry your idea and vision forward as well as helping you to craft your pages so your reader looks forward to turning those pages too.
I found this book to go far beyond what I expected. It covers the author's creative processes, step by step. Shulevitz details the most basic of ingredients of his visualizations and illustrates how he develops them into his finished creations. I have authored several books, and now am beginning to feel that I might try to illustrate them.
Had water damage and smelled like mildew.... so much so, that I can hardly open it to read it. Blech! I would take marked up pages anyway, over mildew smell.
This is a text book for some college courses teaching picture book writing and illustrating. There is a lot of good information. Although I'm not inspired by the images, I do understand the lessons in the book and have learned something from it.
