About the Author
Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and The Ohio State University, having earned both a master's (1970) and a doctorate in sociology (1974) from The Ohio State University with a special emphasis in criminology. From 1976 to 1994, he taught criminology and criminal justice courses at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. For the last 16 of those years, he chaired the university's Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice. The university named him Distinguished Professor in 1991. Schmalleger has taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping build the world's first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university's graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. An avid Web user and website builder, Schmalleger is also the creator of a number of award-winning websites, including some that support this textbook. Frank Schmalleger is the author of numerous articles and more than 40 books, including the widely used Criminal Justice Today (Pearson, 2015), Criminology Today (Pearson, 2015), and Criminal Law Today (Pearson, 2014). Schmalleger is also founding editor of the journal Criminal Justice Studies. He has served as editor for the Pearson series Criminal Justice in the Twenty-First Century and as imprint adviser for Greenwood Publishing Group's criminal justice reference series. Great book, and will be keeping for future reference. Very informative for an entry-level overview of the criminal justice system. Lots of glossy photos and general information. Key words, definitions, and does a great job summarizing the landmark cases that led to the current laws in effect. This book summarizes everything from the way our court system works through Corrections/Incarceration and even the juvenile justice system. It's a great textbook. If you are considering a career in Law and Justice, have an interest in learning more about our nation and how our criminal justice system works, or need a reference book for your education or your classroom for your students, this is a great book. It's affordable if purchased used and you don't need it pristine, and it's a worthwhile investment. The information is accessible, able to be used as a reference book, lists the cases in index form, has a great usage of keynotes and definitions in the margins, and breaks up the information in easily digestible sections. Out of all of my legal books and criminal justice books, this one is one of my favorites.
I am very unhappy with this purchase. I am in an accelerated program that requires this book, and having just gotten into it today, I don't have time to reorder before class begins. Although I knew the book was used, I did not realize that there would be highlighting which was poorly done throughout the entire book, as well as someone's personal notes, and sticky notes on the subject itself. This will make studying incredibly distracting, had I known, I would have paid for a different version.
While I realize that this book is used and that was clearly stated. With it being in "good" condition however, that is what I expected. With this I expected there to be minor corner damage as well as some writing/highlighting throughout the book. But there is significant corner damage- way worse than anticipated. There is also severe water damage in the front of the book. While the book is useable, and saved me money, I just wish the status of the book was more clearly stated.
Easy to read and informative. definitely a keeper for us in studying for a criminal justice career. I would not recomend the "student version" since you would have to invest in a binder and transparent sheets for it to be effective.for online quizes, i have found the digital version of this book indespensible for quick reference aswers. seriously, my grade jumped dramaticaly as a relult of having a digital copy of this book.so for leasure and chapter reading, the book is prefered. but for quick references to specific questions on tests regarding the book the digital version is priceless as it only takes a second to find a sentence or subject using the CTRL+F hotkey.
Wait until the last second and make sure you NEED the course textbook. Don't waste your money unless you really have to
