Author Carlisle appears to be a competent and experienced psychologist and I found the beginning of his book engaging. Apparently he did actually spend some time with Ted Bundy after submitting his professional opinion. At least they did have phone conversations when Ted would call.Carlisle, like several other investigators, regrets that Bundy stayed secretive about his actual feelings and activities. He talked about it but only in a limited degree.What this author does to compensate is make up a whole dialogue between Bundy and himself. This is fantasy out of whole cloth, with Carlisle making up both questions and "Bundy's" answers.Terribly disappointing. I don't care how close it might be to the truth. It's just a foolish attempt that has no chance of having any integrity because we can't put words into Bundys or anybody else's mouth. Really, I'd like to get my money back.
I don't buy that 'entity' schlock for one minute. Just another cold-blooded killer who refuses to accept any sort of blame for his/her own actions. What I did find interesting about this read was the mention of two women killed on a beach on the East Coast. Like many, I feel sure that Bundy is responsible for many more victims than he ever admitted to. Including young Anne Marie Burr, who is mentioned in this book. Although this book could have used a bit more editing, it definitely fills in some blanks that other books have left in the reader's mind. A worthwhile read for the true crime buff.
If you expect chilling, sensationalist accounts of what Ted Bundy did to his victims, then you'll be disappointed. But if you want to understand a little about how a serial killer's mind works, then Dr Al Carlisle gives an expert analysis of the process of change. Much of Carlisle's book is based on an imagined interview with Bundy, with facts gleaned from Bundy himself and other more cooperative killers, yet any supposition on the author's part all still seems pretty realistic. He describes the mental steps of change in Bundy's regressive thinking: from a day-dreaming youth, harmlessly rescuing damsels in distress; to pornography fan; to practising proficiency in stalking; to peeping-tom; to rapist and ultimately killer; and finally to necrophiliac. Bundy's background is discussed in detail as well, as are some of the relationship issues and life experiences that may have combined to lead him into becoming a psychopath. Seemingly, he was never physically abused as a child. This book is both informative and tragic at the same time: tragic for the many victims, and tragic that a charming and respectable young man had to delve so deeply into fantasy that he let the demons of his imagination take over until he had morphed into one of America's worst monsters.
The author took some liberties explaining Bundy's transformation into a serial rapist/killer. He allowed part of this profile to be gleaned based on his research which he then developed into an "educated guess" about how some of the dialogue would have been between them if Bundy were being honest and provided honest details about his motivations and crimes.Interesting mix of fact and fiction but I found it realistic and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I liked the first part because it clarified some details of Bundy's life.The last part of the book, while interesting, sound scripted because it is. It seems more conjecture than fact. I understand it was pieced together from other interviews. It just shows that Bundy did what he did best, play the chameleon.
The story is real and frightening. It's interesting how someone can transform into a brutal death machine fromand everyday man. I think, however, society needs to look at mental illness more seriously and understand thatall people with one are killers intentionally. Ted was perfectly safe before being schizophrenic.
Interesting, but reads more like an education textbook sometimes and there are some conversations that are created by the author and used in a "this is how I think the conversation would have gone" scenario.
This book was a very interesting account of information learned from Ted Bundy from a psychologist who evaluated him extensively for the court system in Utah. It is certainly thought-provoking, postulating some answers regarding how such a dangerous and pathological personality forms while also admitting that there is much that may never be known.
