Absolutely awesome. Used in conjunction with The Official ACT Prep Guide, my daughter's ACT score went from 23 to 29, scoring her a Platinum Presidential Scholarship at her university.
The best ACT study guide out there, bar none. I have helped several kids excel with the ACT using this where Khan Academy, private tutoring, and others have failed. Don't forget to buy the Official Guide so you have all the questions for which this book has the answers and the strategies. The counterpart SAT black book is just as good.
The book is quite long. but the authors have divided it into many sections which are easy to use. A large part is devoted to "walk through" material where the authors break down each real ACT question with a lot of detail. They reveal the best ways to do each question, which are not usually the same as the ACT recommends.The drawback of this book is that it does not contain practice tests! It only contains a lot of training on different aspects of taking the ACT along with a lot of the walk throughs. The authors stress the importance of only working with real, official ACT questions from the company that writes the ACT.I expect this to be a very helpful resource for all students at all levels because it covers every aspect in a well-organized way. It is quite long but no student will need to read it all. It provides a complete road map. I am glad I have it.
I've been tutoring for the ACT for a while now and have seen a lot of prep books. This book is filled with many valuable tips that I've never seen in any other books. Some of it may be common sense for some, but it's articulated in really clear and concise ways. For others, they may never have considered the approach, e.g. using the "vertical scan" effectively for each of the four sections, or how to effectively search text.The book is useful for the general strategies, but what is most useful is the way it goes through literally EVERY question from the "Official ACT Prep Guide" with better explanations than are in the red book. It also provides tie backs to strategies already explained in the book, and step-by-step explanations of how you should tackle the question. This is most useful for diligent students who want to/can learn from her/his mistakes. (If every student could do this on their own, there'd be no use for tutors!)One thing to note is that the format/layout of the book could be better. The text is laid out very densely, without good cues for main and sub-ideas. That said, I still give it 5 stars because it's stellar in every other way.
This book is a gold mind of tips and tricks on how to approach the ACT. DO NOT SKIP the introduction and first chapter. Follow his directions and you won't go wrong. You will also need to purchase the Offical ACT Study Guide from ACT or this book is useless - you need both books. Worth every penny.
This book is amazing. It got me from feeling stuck at a 31, to getting a 34. Before my first ACT, I took 6 practice tests and dedicated months to review. I felt like there wasn't anymore I could do to study, then I got the black book. It says you can learn all the material/strategies in about a week, and it's right. I spent around 2 and half weeks prepping before the test. After I became comfortable with the strategies in the book, the ACT was easy money. Bottom line: follow the strategies stated in the book, they won't let you down.
It seems to be giving my son valuable insights as to how the ACT is structured and scored.
This second edition is a great tool to get your student prepared for the ACT. It works in conjunction with the ACT Red book acquired from ACT.org. Great tips, easy to follow, and amazing insight. I highly recommend this book to any student preparing to take the ACT.
