I am extremely glad that I read this book.The mystery of why Joseph Stalin was apparently surprised by the June 22, 1941 Nazi invasion, if he was indeed surprised, is one of the most controversial and puzzling issues of World War II history. There are those who contend that Uncle Joe was planning his own invasion for just a week or so later, see Victor Suvorov's Icebreaker or The Main Culprit. Even though I find Suvorov's argument fascinating, by far most historians reject it using more polite terms but in essence calling it crank history. David Murphy's account of the various streams of information coming into Stalin goes a long way to explaining how Uncle Joe may have deceived himself.David Murphy's "What Stalin Knew" makes it clear that Stalin's otherwise relatively clear perception of reality was "clouded' at best in 1941 if not delusional. I'm still waiting for the definitive resolution of this issue; but reading this in conjunction with David Glantz's Stumbling Colossus makes it clear that Stalin would have been crazy to think that the Red Army could take on the Wehrmacht in the summer of 1941 but maybe he was.If this issue interests you, I highly recommend you read David Murphy's "What Stalin Knew"

Previous authors did not have this luxury.Stalin dismissed reports of a German invasion because,it seems, he was certain it would not occur. In twoletters from Hitler, duplicated in the book, Stalinhad the Fuehrer's "word." When the invasionoccurred, he went into seclusion thinking he would beterminated. He ordered Molotov to announce that thewar had begun - distancing himself from that event.Those who told him what they perceived to be truewere shot or replaced. Those who lied, telling himwhat he wanted to hear, were spared.Suppose Stalin realized that the Soviet Union alonecould not defeat Germany. Did he deliberately allowthe invasion to occur so that the Allies would rush tohis assistance ? In other books, particularlyOperation Snow and The Final Secret of Pearl Harbor,two authors gave their thoughts concerning PresidentRoosevelt's and Stalin's attempts to aid Britain andRussia. Did he allow Germany to invade, knowingthat without the Soviet Army the Allies would havea difficult time defeating Hitler and his allies ?Codeword Barbarossa by Barton Whaley, an earlierbook, lists 84 warnings concerning the invasion.
Like any armistice after a long and bitter struggle, there was much fraternizing between former enemies when the disintegration of the Soviet Union brought about the end of the Cold War. It is unclear what ex-CIA official David Murphy told his Russian counterparts when the boys got together to talk over old times. Obvious from this book is that the intelligence officials from behind the Curtain took the opportunity to clear themselves and their service of any blame for the most disastrous failure by a head of State in modern times. Though we never can know what remains hidden, there was apparently an unprecedented opening of secret files by the Soviet side, to show how well the spies did their job of informing Stalin of Hitler's preparations to attack the Soviet Union and how fiendishly clever the Nazis were in obfuscating it.The problem with this book is that the author essentially acts as a mouthpiece for the alphabet soup of former Red spy organs: MVD [military intelligence], GRU, NKGB, RU. The leading spymasters of each organization are profiled as to personal history, accomplishments and ultimate fate, often in numbing detail. Some paid the ultimate price for having been right where the Boss was wrong. Some survived but few prospered.The author repeats some dubious legends concerning the period of Soviet-German "friendship" such as the existence of a letter to Stalin signed by Hitler giving his word "as a head of state" that the military preparations in eastern Poland were all directed against England. Hitler never signed anything. Examples of his actual signature are extremely rare.While Murphy is no A.J.P. Taylor for style, the book reads well and is of appropriate length.
A superb addition to our understanding of the most relevant aspect of world-war-two.
