From School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up— In time for the 50th anniversary of Roald Dahl's classic, this work takes an in-depth look at the origins of the iconic tale of Charlie and his golden ticket. In an almost-scholarly tone, each chapter covers a distinct topic, such as the British author's inspiration for the beloved title, the book's impact on popular culture, and comparisons among and the reception of the various film and stage adaptations. Part biography, part history, Managan's work explores Dahl's tragic family history and relationships with the editors and illustrators that helped him bring his iconic story to life. Especially interesting is the discussion of the initial critical reactions (even mostly harsh ones from the librarian community), because of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's irreverent humor and hard honest look at the flaws of the human character. Kids might be turned off by the nostalgic sensibility of the text and the sometimes over-the-top (and corny) jokes, but this title will especially strike a chord with fans of Dahl's work, students of classic children's literature, and those interested in the early days of modern publishing. The thorough back matter, including archival, full-color photos; extensive bibliography and further reading lists; delightful illustrations and reproductions; and quotations from those intimately connected with the various iterations, make this a stand-out title for creative writing, English, popular culture, film, and kid lit courses. Especially useful for making comparisons across media, this book ensures that Dahl's legacy will endure as long as an everlasting gobstopper.—Shelley Diaz, School Library Journal

Awesome!! Great detail and it separates the info between the book, movies, musicals etc. Every Willy Wonka fan's dream!!
Purchased as a gift. Arrived quickly and exactly as advertised. Thanks!
Wonderful book!! My Mom loved it and she is a die hard fan of the factory books!!
Falsely advertised! The book received is a “partial blast showing selected pages†and not the complete 224 page book I thought I was purchasing. Nowhere does it explain this!
Fans of Roald Dahl and of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory have a lot to be thankful for in this delectable book. In this year when we celebrate the Golden Anniversary of Charlie, this well-written book is a timely tribute to the story and its impact on our lives.Guardian journalist Lucy Mangan writes this book in an engaging, accessible way. She writes as someone who knows and loves her subject matter. It examines the origins of the story, its various adaptations, its impact on popular culture and even the Wonka sweet spin-offs inspired by the book. It is a detailed, thorough, behind-the-scenes tour of the book and its adaptations. She even offers up her thoughts on what made each adaptation work even though she betrays a slight bias to the Gene Wilder film of 1971. The best thing is the comparison between the four different illustrated editions of the story to date. I loved the comparison she drew between the illustrations of Schindelman, Jaques, Foreman and Blake. It is fascinating to see these various illustrations side by side and it saves me the trouble of having to purchase first edition copies at exorbitant prices. Admittedly, after looking at the Schindelman drawings, I felt that they did not quite define the characters as well as those done by other illustrators. Not to begrudge those who grew up with Schindelman's version, but it's just that the characters weren't drawn distinctly in his drawings. There are only a couple of small points I would like to highlight. They don't weaken the book per se but it would be helpful to the author if she ever updates the book. It would have been good if Mangan had moved her sections about Roald's schooldays, his Cadbury-tasting sessions and his love of chocolate to the beginning. It would have made for a more effective opening if we readers were introduced to Dahl's personality and his love of chocolate. It feels abrupt to start the story in the middle by describing the evolution of his Charlie manuscript in the years when Dahl wrote the story. Dahl's abiding love of chocolate and the Cadbury boxes are an important influence on the story, and so it would be better to speak of Dahl's school when recounting the origins of the story. It would be a helpful reminder to readers that the origins of the story did not start in 1961, but back in Repton during Dahl's schooldays. Another point I would like to mention is that it would be good if this book had the chance to show us the difference between Dahl's first Oompa-Loompa chapter (in the 1964 Knopf edition with Schindelman's drawings) and the rewritten version we know today. I know that this cut passage is an objectionable passage and I'm not saying it needs to cause trouble or stir up racial tensions. However it would be good to print it for the sake of comparison, so that readers know that this important part needed changing. I admit I would find it more helpful if Mangan had the chance to say a little bit about the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It may be weaker than Dahl's other books but it is still part of the history of Charlie. As such it would still be worth a mention in this book.Despite these two small omissions I'm sure that this book will delight many a Dahl fan or a Charlie fan. It has already made me hungry for Wonka chocolate bars. It is an absolute whipple-scrumptious treat to even get your hands on a copy. It is well worth the purchase for any Dahl fan.
If you've ever wanted to know everything there is to know about Roald Dahl's CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, this might be the book for you. Celebrating Charlie's 50th birthday, INSIDE CHARLIE’S CHOCOLATE FACTORY goes deep into the world of Willy Wonka, Oompa Loompas and of course Charlie Bucket. Giving a behind the scenes look at the book, both of the movies, stage shows and pop culture references, this book is packed with trivia and insight into the classic story. It also gives a brief history of the chocolate industry and how Roald came to want to write about it. All with tons of glossy, color photos that'll have you salivating on every page!As a huge fan of Roald Dahl's book, I loved getting to learn more about the world of Willy Wonka. I found the first three sections to be the most interesting. This first section is all about Roald's process and how the book came to exist. It also covered its publication around the world and its reception. The second section was all about the various adaptations of the book, particularly the two movies that were made. The book goes into much more detail with the Gene Wilder version, but it was neat to learn about the process for each movie and how certain things changed from one to the other. There were a lot of things the older movie couldn't do simply because the special effects technology wasn't as advanced as the younger movie. They also had two wildly different interpretations of Willy Wonka himself, with Gene Wilder playing him as joyfully demented and Johnny Depp playing him more childlike. It was cool to read about the directors' different takes on the same source material. The third section compared the illustrations from four editions of the book, showing the drawings from Joseph Schindelman, Faith Jaques, Michael Foreman and of course Quentin Blake. It was cool to see each artist's interpretation of the story, but I definitely felt most attached to the illustrations in my old battered copy from when I was a kid!The last two sections are a little drier, with one about the effect the book had on pop culture, one about the history of chocolate and the last one about the critical reception of the book. But they're worth a read if you're interested in learning a little more about the world beyond the book.INSIDE CHARLIE’S CHOCOLATE FACTORY is definitely a lot of fun if you have a Wonka fan in your life. It's a quick read with plenty of trivia that'll entertain and even surprise you. All in all it's a great companion for the 50-year-old classic!Reviewed by Rebecca Czochor
