Although this book was written with a specific audience in mind, I have to say I love it and I use it often. What drew me to this book where three particular things above all else which were: A) It is written in a course book format which is useful. B) It has many tables and diagrams that are easy to use and understand. C) The book puts a lot of the information into a depth of historical antiquity; which personally I like.I would not take all of the information at face value and as it is written for a specific audience it can still be used with some modification to teach and use as a valuable reference and learning device. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone studying witchcraft, magic, and the like, especially those just curious or beginning. Being an eclectic practitioner and adherent I don't incorporate everything I read into my spiritual study and practice but by far this book broadly covers a depth of many areas it is more useful and intriguing than not.
Finally a Book that Makes Magick Appealing and FunThere have been quite a few people who have bashed Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and his whole Grey School but you know as I have been reading one of his required textbooks for the Apprentice Wizard, I am finding his suggestions rather clever and enlightened. He does have a few minor issues in some of the historical factoid back grounding of various topics but his work is geared at the YA crowd and it is easy to overlook what appears to be a gloss over. He provides enough info to whet a newbie's appetite to learn and ferret out the particulars. I have been actively studying magick and the occult for over twenty years and I have an extensive knowledge of a variety of traditions and I have read hundreds of texts within most of the occult genres and subgenres so I consider myself to an authority on the validity of texts in the field. I give this text my seal of approval because it is written in a way that inspires a new student to further their own study. It doesn't tell as much as it shows which is a remarkable achievement with an introductory text to magick and occult studies.I am actually enjoying Ravenheart's textbook and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great primer into the realm of occult literature. The author provides some great practical exercises to further develop one's metaphysical and psychic self. He has been practicing since the 1960s, which is impressive and he does have a wealth of wisdom to share.For those who complained about the Harry Potter references, I really did not find any of these references detracting and the real world of magick is never compared to the fictional world of magick represented in Harry Potter. Any and all works to references of wizardly fictions in this text are to add a bit of spice and are used as a way to connect the material with the reader and it makes the reading fun. You can't go wrong to buy this book and absorb its contents and I am sure you will find yourself enjoying the experience no matter what your level, tradition or back ground. Ravenheart is a joy to read.
This book is a rarity. It is designed to teach a YA audience about all the different approaches to occultism, pagan philosophies and how a young person can exist as a practitioner or pagan in a Judeo-Christian society.All without condescension towards the young person or disparaging another faith tradition.It's primary audience aside, it's a very handy reference for any age, and distills down a lot of hermetic concepts that can be a bit opaque, and often disregarded, by a normal practioner.
This review is of both the book and the Grey school. The book alone is too much info. It's like buying a Boy Scout handbook and giving it to a kid but not letting them join Scouts. I bought this book and signed up for the school. The book is great when working with the school. The book seems a bit too pagan, but the school is fine with the fact that I'm a Christian. I don't read the spells, but use prayers and verses from the Bible with the same affects. It teaches kids to think for themselves and to look at the world from a different perspective than they would get otherwise. I'll be letting all of my kids go through this program, as it is more open minded than Boy Scouts and will let them focus on what they like; science, plants, etc. I do think the book is too religious, even though they try to pretend it is not and the author comes across and a little odd but fun. It's a great introduction to a larger world you will not get without the school. But, you can use this book as a starting point then just buy lots of other books that will take you down the path you are actually interested in.
Great book if you are attending the Grey School of Wizardry, as this is required reading material. The book seems geared to teaching young students about the principals of magick, it covers a wide variety of wizardly subjects.Originally I had given this book a 3 star review, although after reading it further I am upping my review to 4 stars.On a positive note, the book does cover a wide list of magickal subjects, and would be a great start for those who don't know much of anything on magick. But if you are experienced, I doubt you will gain much from this book.
