To Lister, hiking is a sport with an intrinsic aesthetic reward—more a test of powers of observation and appreciation than an act of somehow conquering a trail. She's also a good. clear writer in a field where overwriting is rife. She is a keen observer (and excellent photographer) and paying attention to her tips on what to look for can prepare you for some special experiences. Lister tells you pretty much everything you need to know before you head out the door—from where to get maps, where to park near the trailhead, distance as she actually measured it (which differs from map-based distances), and degree of difficulty. The book seemed well written but I sent it back. It didn't have overview maps, which I find essential, to give me a feeling of where exactly the hike is, what side of the mountain or river I should be on. It also lacked any useful lists of, for example, best long hikes, best short hikes, hikes for kids, dogs, wildflowers, waterfalls, snow, best in summer, spring or etc. To me this is the main motivating factor to own such a book, to help me explore and choose a hike. Hopefully a second edition someday would include these features!
I actually returned this book, but that was only because I didn’t need such a detailed and complete hiking book because I’m only going on a week long vacation to SD. However, if you live in that area or travel there frequently, I’d highly recommend this book.
Gave it to my husband as a gift. It is super heavy so you would never carry it with you on a hike. The descriptions are pretty good. Mostly wanted to find some local hikes that were in my range , not too hard , not too easy , but just right ! I heard the author on NPR and that is what made me order this guide. She was claiming there were lots of hikes in San Diego county that fit the decription i was looking for!
Certainly not sorry I purchased this book.Amazon states that this book is the #1 Best Seller in San Diego , California Travel Books.Extensive research resulted in a complete, concise, well-organized body of work.I would suggest that you take a look at the Amazon "Look inside" feature.If this subject matter is of interest to you, I believe that you will find it to be a very worthwhile purchase.-Tom H.-San Diego
We like hiking new trails in San Diego County and this book lists many new places to try that don't seem too difficult to find. We have already gone on one hike and the directions were easy to follow.
I am an avid San Diego County hiker, and I really thought I'd hit most of San Diego's trails in the 20+ years I've been hiking. Boy was I wrong. This book is filled with hikes I never knew about. I highly recommend this book to hikers who feel as though they have "been there, done that." Great job, Priscilla Lister!
Thick heavy book. Wish it was a little easier to find things in it. But overall it is good.
