Review
“This book is groundbreaking! I’ve pastored for more than three decades and never before have I read such a clear, theologically sound, compassionate, and insightful work on sexuality. Juli addresses all the sexual issues most Christians are afraid to talk about, and she provides deeper answers than most of us have ever considered. She offers not only practical wisdom to navigate the sexual confusion of our day but also a paradigm-changing game plan to sexually disciple those God has placed in our care.” —Chip Ingram, president and teaching pastor of Living on the Edge and author of Culture Shock “The church has been silent about sex except for shouting, ‘No, wait! It will one day be great.’ But many believers are not waiting, and most are finding out that sex is a lot more difficult and broken than they want to admit. It is high time we begin to understand the narrative and meaning of one of God’s great gifts to humanity and what it means to grow not only in sexual purity but also in maturity. I deeply respect Juli Slattery. Her thinking is foundationally biblical and wise while also being well informed and thoughtful. I consider this a seminal work to aid the church in growing in a conversation that goes beyond Just say no.” —Dan B. Allender, PhD, author of The Wounded Heart and God Loves Sex, professor of counseling psychology and founding president of the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology “Tragically, secular values about sexuality have become integrated into every possible aspect of life. It is frightening, and as moms and leaders, we don’t know how to undo the damage done to hearts, minds, and lives. Dr. Juli Slattery arrives with hope! Rethinking Sexuality brings answers to our cries of ‘Teach me how to sexually disciple my children’ and ‘Help me better disciple my church!’ I need this book! And I highly recommend it to you!” —Linda Dillow, speaker and author of Passion Pursuit and Intimate Issues “If you’re anything like me, you’ve never expected to see the two words sexual and discipleship purposely paired together. But get ready for a whole new paradigm in this incredibly important book. Dr. Slattery is, in my opinion, one of the most articulate, thought-provoking, clear-thinking writers and speakers on genuine intimacy on the planet. Forget the toaster as a wedding gift. Give this book to newly married couples who have grown up in our sexual wasteland of a world. And make sure you and your spouse devour this book as well, like my wife, Cindy, and I did. Juli is right—we are all sexually broken in some ways. Here’s where healing and health can begin.” —John Trent, PhD, author and president of StrongFamilies.com, Gary D. Chapman Chair of Marriage and Family Ministry and Therapy at Moody Theological Seminary “At a time when well-intentioned Christians are veering into dangerous error, Dr. Juli Slattery is the expert I trust to balance grace and truth in explaining God’s plan for human sexuality. Like no other expert on this topic, Dr. Slattery combines education, compassion, professional qualification, and biblical conviction to chart a practical path forward.” —John S. Dickerson, author of Hope of Nations and lead pastor of Connection Pointe Christian Church “My friend Juli Slattery has dedicated her life to helping men and especially women navigate the often intimidating landscape of human sexuality. She does this with grace, empathy, wisdom, and a deep understanding of God’s divine design for sex as outlined in Scripture. This book will encourage and inspire you—and when was the last time you could say a book about sex did that?” —Dr. Greg Smalley, vice president of marriage and family formation at Focus on the Family “Dr. Juli Slattery has once again reminded us why she is our generation’s leading expert on human sexuality and questions of intimacy. Rethinking Sexuality is as biblically faithful as it is riveting. The illusion of sexual freedom has only made true intimacy more elusive for our culture. Juli reminds us that healing begins when we look upward. Rethinking Sexuality is a must-read for every pastor in America who desires to marry sound theology with compassion and wise action!” —Chris Brooks, MA, campus dean of Moody Theological Seminary, Michigan “The apostle Paul warned us about getting squeezed into the world’s mold, and it would be hard to find a bigger or more addictive ‘mold’ than the sexual one. We are pounded with the world’s teaching on sexuality from every quarter, every day. Yet the body of Christ remains befuddled and appears powerless before the onslaught. Juli is calling us to action…to know and live and teach the positive case for true sexuality. As she says: ‘It’s time to reclaim sexuality as a holy expression of God’s goodness and love.’ I couldn’t agree more.” —Dr. Del Tackett, author and teacher, The Truth Project and Is Genesis History? “Dr. Juli Slattery is right when she asserts that most Christians have been sexually discipled by today’s culture. She provides the body of Christ a needed wake-up call. Our view of God, Scripture, and all relationships flow through the grid of our sexuality. Without a biblical view of sexuality, we won’t get anything right. I heartily recommend Juli’s seminal work. This is one of those ‘must-reads’ for the church. Read it, live it, and disciple others in it.” —Josh McDowell, speaker, best-selling author, and founder of Josh McDowell Ministry

I love the way Juli speaks and writes on this sensitive subject. Her heart and compassion for the sexual brokenness in each of us flows through the pages of this book. You'll want to highlight and memorize just about every sentence. No matter what your worldview may be, there is no denying that sexuality has been severely misunderstood and misused. Let's all try something different and be the change.
This is a book the church has needed. The writer addresses people who are so broken they believe they will never be whole, and the people who believe they are so whole they will never be broken. We all carry some kind of baggage or damage that can affect how we relate sexually. As the writer points out, sometimes that damage is nothing more than the effect of a culture that has twisted our view of what sexuality it. At the core of our desire to be with another person is our primal need to be intimate with another being.
In our world of shifting perspectives and rapidly changing opinions, Dr. Slattery’s writing rises above simple, cliché answers to hot-button sexual issues, and highlights the immutable truth of God’s design for sexuality. For decades, the Christian church has been silent, if not dysfunctional in its response to the painful sexual questions that we all face. With amazing clarity, beautifully mixing grace and truth, the author spotlights WHO God is and WHO we are as humans with solid biblical underpinnings.Consider this quote: “Sexual questions begin with questions about how we view God, sin, human nature, and the authority of the bible…Differing views on gay marriage, cohabitation, pornography, and divorce aren’t primarily what divide us. These are just the external issues that have exposed what we really believe about God and His Word.†– page 182Please don’t dismiss this important resource! I’ve been personally challenged to confront my own sexual integrity, the humility and compassion with which I view others, and the way I engage others in sensitive, respectful conversation. Thank you authenticintimacy.org for this bold, insightful book!
Rethinking Sexuality is an engaging, unique, and needed resource for gaining a deeper understanding of God's design for sexuality. In a world that is quick to define sex for us, give us innumerable images of counterfeit forms of it (via porn), and lead us toward a "me-based" understanding of it, Rethinking Sexuality is a gentle yet thorough expose of all God intended for sex and sexuality since the beginning of time.I learned so much from this book... about God's covenant love, about the need for a paradigm shift in our understanding of sex (having been taught mostly by the world and rarely by the Church), about how the enemy wants to destroy sexuality (it's that powerful that the enemy targets it), and more. Don't want to give it all away!Dive into this gem and drink it in slowly. Dr. Slattery's teaching voice is like that of a trusted friend who's been at the feet of Jesus with her own struggles and unmet desires. She's a gentle guide. Let the Holy Spirit reshape all you've thought about sexuality and sex. Learn how to reach others with the truth of the goodness of sexuality and let's see how God may use this book. We are all sexually broken and we can all find meaning and purpose in the gift of sexuality, whether you're married, single, same-sex attracted, wounded, or you've strayed, you'll find hope and healing here.I pray these truths will reach far beyond our own lives and help the Christian Church become a light to the world desperate for truth about sexuality. And consider the companion study for groups!I received an advance copy of this book to preview and I'm grateful to be able to share about it! I have also been blessed to meet Dr. Juli Slattery and work with her on some ministry related projects. She's as real as they come. I know you'll enjoy learning from her!
This book is what is needed in the church today. Many are suffering and are in need of healing within our families, communities and our churches. Creating a safe place to heal is essential and the church can be that place without judgement and criticism. Dr Juli clearly lays out how Jesus came to redeem sexual brokenness. As a Christian Marriage and Family therapist, I especially appreciated chapter 4 and the connection of covenant and marriage. "Sexual desire draws us to covenantâ€, this is exactly what learning God's design for sexuality within our marriage accomplishes - covenantal love, not a contractual arrangement. Great resource that I will recommend to my clients. Great insight and wisdom in its pages. Many page flags in this book (see photo). I just bought two more copies for my pastors. We need more sermon series on this topic! Thanks Dr Juli for taking on this tough topic. You tenderly and lovingly showed us all a way for redemption and hope within our sexual brokenness as we pursue the heart of God!
God has seriously given Juli Slattery such a gift and heart to teach God's design for sexuality which has inspired me to spread the truth along! My husband and I are reading through Rethinking Sexuality and so appreciate the thought provoking questions we can ask each other at the end of each chapter. It doesn't matter how pure or how Christian you are, sexuality has been distorted for us all because of sin and the culture. Juli so helpfully points it all back to God's Word. She explains God's design for sexuality in the most non-shaming, easy to understand, and compassionate way. I believe God is using the ministry Authentic Intimacy to make our hearts tender to the sexually broken and to bring our own brokeness to God without shame. I am thrilled for the voices that are crying out the truth of sexuality and the healing that is possible for us all.My husband and I listen and relisten to the Java with Juli podcast all the time which I highly recommend. :)
