Dr. A. Hillary Steinhart, MD, MSc, FRCP(C) is Head of the Combined Division of Gastroenterology for Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network in Toronto. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. His research interests are in the areas of clinical trials, outcomes assessments, and the genetics of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Very informative about drugs, but not so helpful for diet.
Anyone who is suffering from an inflammatory bowel disease, thinks they might have IBD, or knows someone who does will find Dr. Steinhart's book to be thorough and informative. (IBD is an umbrella term that includes Crohn's and ulcerative colitis; note that irritable bowel syndrome is a different condition.) She covers an impressive amount of ground, from understanding the 101s of IBD (symptoms, possible complications, terms to know) to what to expect once you're diagnosed in terms of best managing the disease on a daily basis. IBD affects everyone differently, so if you're struggling with day-to-day issues, learning about the various strategies the book covers will be helpful: Dr. Steinhart discusses dietary approaches, psychological support, drug therapies, and surgical treatment options, all interspersed with case studies and medical illustrations. She also includes a section geared specifically towards children with IBD and a resources section listing organizations that offer educational materials and additional books patients may want to explore.Although I don't personally suffer from IBD, I'm a medical nerd and wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the ins and outs (no pun intended) of IBD and was hoping that Dr. Steinhart would have written an accessible-yet-detailed book. I was not disappointed! This is a great book for anyone who's interested in learning more about this surprisingly common chronic condition.
